Moving? Declutter Before You Pack, Not After

The mover's test

Walk each room with one question: if I wouldn't pay to move this, why am I paying to move this? The bread maker used twice, the furniture bought for a different house's floor plan, the boxes still sealed from the last move — the last category is the most honest audit you'll ever do. If it stayed boxed through an entire residency, it's not belongings; it's ballast.

The four exits

Everything that fails the test leaves by one of four doors: sell, donate, gift, haul. Selling works for items with real value and a few weeks of runway. Donation takes the usable bulk. Gifting handles the things friends have always admired. And the haul pile — broken, expired, or simply done — is what a removal crew exists for. One visit, everything leaves.

The order that prevents chaos

Purge before you pack a single box — never during. Packing and purging simultaneously means every item gets handled twice and every decision gets made under time pressure. Room by room: purge completely, then pack what survived. The rooms finish faster and the boxes arrive lighter.

The deadline hierarchy

Work backward from moving day. The garage, attic, and outbuildings go first — they're the highest-volume, lowest-attachment zones, and clearing them builds momentum. Sentimental areas go last, when the decision muscle is warmed up. The week before the move is for loading, not for finally confronting the storage closet.
